2nd Workshop
June 25-27, 2014, Göttingen
Motivation:
The first workshop of the Working Group on Sediment Generation (WGSG) was held in Cosenza (Calabria, Italy) in June 2010. It was an exciting meeting that brought together some 65 scientists from all over Europe and the U.S., and was perfectly organized by Luca Caracciolo and Salvatore Critelli. Many of the results are summarized in a special issue of Sedimentary Geology, published in Dec 2012. After four years, we believe it is time to meet again under this umbrella in order to further improve exchange between the researchers involved and to streamline some activities towards joint projects. The WGSG is an informal and loose assemblage of scientists working on topics like sediment generation and dispersal, composition and provenance, as well as mass balancing and modelling of the relevant processes. Anyone interested in some of these or in related topics is invited to join us.
Scope:
The workshop is intended to (i) share recent developments in techniques and concepts, (ii) discuss exciting new case studies from modern and ancient environments, and (iii) make a step towards a European initiative for a joint research project on sediment generation and dispersal. Therefore, besides topical scientific sessions, we aim to give ample space to a round table discussion to evaluate and push possible joint efforts.
Structure:
The workshop will last around 2.5 days from Wednesday afternoon, June 25, to Friday evening, June 27. The workshop will be preceded by the SPA short course. On Wednesday we will start with some introduction and two or three central keynote lectures, followed by the ice breaker party. Sessions (successively) will be on Thursday and Friday. Workshop dinner will be on Thursday evening, open table discussion on Friday afternoon and may continue into the evening.
Topical sessions of the workshop will include:
(i)
Sediment generation and provenance (including new techniques, single-grain and
multi-method approaches, case studies, etc.)
(ii) Sediment budget (including erosion and sedimentation
rates, mass balance approaches, case studies, etc.)
(iii) Data handling and Modelling (including outliers, mixing
and endmembers, age spectra, statistical and numerical
modelling, etc.)
For each session, we intend to invite a couple
of keynote speakers. All other participants are requested
to present posters that we believe will increase discussion between participants.
We intend to have extended poster sessions along with coffee breaks and evening
drinks. Each poster presentation will be given a
short time slot (2-3 minutes, depending on number of posters) for oral introduction
to attract attention in the audience and enhance a lively debate.
