Blatt, Middleton & Murray (1972, pp 301) published a plot where they conveyed "the probable relationship between grain size and detrital fragment composition, based on the limited data currently available". The plot gives, for the range of commonly-occurring grain sizes (in /phi/ scale), the composition on five parts (rock fragments, poly-crystalline quartz, mono-crystalline quartz, feldspar and mica), summarizing several processes, like comminution, dissolution or feldspar alteration. This talk presents the (successful) modelization of the relationship /phi/-composition as a /single/ balance of processes, following statistical techniques specially devised for compositional data (Aitchison, 1986; Pawlowsky-Glahn, 2003).
