Duration each day: 9:00 - 12:30 (Morning session) and
13:30 - 17:00 (Afternoon session)

Coffee breaks: 10:30 - 11:00 and 15:00 - 15:30

Lunch break: 12:30 - 13:30

Poster presentation

The attendees will have the opportunity to present their own data and problems in form of a poster, which will be discussed during coffee breaks and after the afternoon sessions within the group to find solutions and/ or the best ideas for further investigation.

Content of the course

Monday: Principles and Methodological Overview

Afternoon session

Introduction (definitions, motivation, scope of the course)
Basic concepts in SPA, problems & challenges
Overview on the methodological toolbox
Bulk sediment techniques (petrography, geochemistry)

Late Afternoon / Evening: Ice-Breaker Party (17:30 to approx. 20:00)

Tuesday: Heavy Minerals and Varietal Studies

Morning session

Introduction to heavy minerals (HM)
Varietal studies I (single-grain analysis)
Applications

Afternoon session

Introduction to Raman Spectroscopy (RS)
Applications of RS to heavy mineral analysis

Late Afternoon / Evening: Poster tour

Wednesday: Compositional Data Analysis and Detrital Geochronology

Morning session

Invited guest lecturer Gert Jan Weltje (KU Leuven, Belgium)

Compositional Data Analysis: Introduction, Applications and Modelling

Afternoon session

Crystallization ages (Method: U-Pb; Mineral: zircon)
Metamorphic ages (Methods: U-Pb, Ar/Ar; Minerals: monazite, titanite, rutile, mica)
Practical exercises

Thursday: Compositional Data Analysis, Thermochronology and Statistics

Varietal studies II (single-grain analysis)

Low-temperature geochronometers (FT, (U-Th)/He)
Statistical methods and software for proper interpretation of complex distributions
