July 1971: Pre-Diploma
in Mineralogy at Johannes-Gutenberg-Universitaet Mainz (Germany)
Febr. 1974: Diploma
in Mineralogy (Geochemistry) at Georg-August Universitaet Goettingen
Diploma-Thesis: Geochemical investigations on atmospheric precipitatiom
in Goettingen. 54 pp., Geochemistry Department, University of Goettingen.
April 1978: Ph.D.
at Georg-August Universitaet Goettingen
PhD-Thesis: Geochemical investigations on the genesis of Mn-Fe-nodules
from the equatorial Pacific. Dissertation, 210 pp., Geochemistry Department,
University of Goettingen.
Sept. 1978 - Jan. 1982:
Post-Doctorate Researcher at Museum fuer Voelkerkunde, Staatliche Museen
in Berlin (Museum of Ethnology, National Museums in Berlin)

Latin-America - chemical and physical investigations to determine the
origin and exchange of turquoise" (granted by VW-Foundation, Germany)
Febr. 1982 - May 1992:
Researcher and head of the laboratories for soil, water, sediment and
rock analysis, Bavarian Geological Survey at Munich (Bayerisches Geologisches
Landesamt, Muenchen), main, trace and ultratrace elemental analysis,
1985 introduction of ICP-MS; optimization of laboratories for ultratrace
analysis.
main research: soil and water protection; natural and anthropogenic
elemental concentrations in water, soils and sediments.
since June 1992: Professor
of Environmental & Sedimentary Geochemistry at Georg-August Universitaet
Goettingen
~30 bachelor and diploma theses, Ph theses and heavy metal pollution
of soil, sediment, water, mires and plants and reconstruction of environmental
history of the Harz and other areas.
Some diploma thesis concerning sedimentary geochemistry and geochemical
methods.
Invention of devices for ultraclean laboratories such as digestion apparatus,
sub-boiling distillation units etc.
Chair of the research project "The Bioenergy Village - Utilization
of biomass as a sustainable supply for heat and electricity, its feasibility
in rural areas, its ecological, sociological and economic impact".
The general purpose of our interdisciplinary group is to switch the
electricity and heat supply from conventional to biomass energy sources
by active involvement of the population. The geochemical concern is
to provide an environmental impact assessment study by analyzing and
balancing the flow of elements and energy during energy production on
biomass basis in comparison to energy supply from fossil fuels as coal,
oil and gas.
Since 2007 Director of the Interdisciplinary Centre of Sustainable Development
at the University of Göttingen.
Since 2009 Chair of the interdisciplinary research project: "Sustainable
use of bioenergy: bridging climate protection, nature conservation and
society" in cooperation with several departments at the University
of Göttingen, Hannover, Darmstadt and of Harz University, with
LBEG (Landesamt für Bergbau, Energie und Geologie = State Authority
for Mining, Energy and Geology) in Hannover, Helmholtz-Centre München,
Technology and Support Centre (Technologie- und Förderzentrum)
- Renewable Resources (TFZ) in Straubing (Bavaria). We want to
deepen and validate the basic and applied knowledge to produce bioenergy
on a sustainable way by bridging conflicting demands of climate stabilization
and resource conservation with landscape protection, with water, air,
and soil preservation, with interests of society and farmers, and with
economy.
1997/8 and 2002/3:
Two sabbatical stays at the Department of Geological & Environmental
Geology and Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory, Stanford University,
California
